Summary:
The Shelter Director oversees the daily operations through leadership over the animal care, client services, and animal protection departments.
This person works collaboratively with directors and officers to meet the needs of the animals under care of the ARL.
The position is responsible for ensuring the proper policies and procedures are implemented to keep animals moving safely through the shelter.
This person would also be responsible for making recommendations to increase revenue and fundraising efforts.
Additionally, they would exhibit big picture thinking to allow for continued elevation to programming and lifesaving efforts for animals in the shelter and surrounding communities.
Reporting:
This role reports to the CEO and supervises the following departments/managers:
Animal Care Animal Protection Client Services Facilities Manager Through encouraging and supportive leadership this person will use their emotional intelligence and relationship building skills to be mentors to the managers throughout the shelter and create an environment where everyone feels included and inspired.
Responsibilities:
Plans, organizes, and oversees sheltering services, animal control and protection services, facilities, and client services to ensure they meet the needs of the animals and organization Evaluates, oversees, and assists in developing new and existing programs Oversees the population of animals at the shelter to ensure the animals are moving through the shelter properly and receiving adequate care Follows all local, state, and federal laws in regard to animal housing, care, admission and disposition Submit kennel license and liaison with PA dog warden for all inspections Oversee and manage inventory, storage and wish lists of their reporting departments Facilitates proper communication between departments to ensure everyone is receiving the same information Assures that protocols, policies, procedures are being properly implemented and administered in day-to-day operations Works with Human Resources Director to all personnel related items Works with Chief Finance Officer to meet budgeting and revenue projections/goals Works with Medical Director to ensure all shelter animal medical needs are met Works with the Chief Communication Officer to communicate shelter needs and important updates to the public Oversees statistics tracking and submits data for annual reporting and national reporting requirements Develops a thorough knowledge of how to use any current software programs in the shelter to oversee animal documentation Develops reports required by CEO and Board Committee Ability to fill in for managers or shelter team members when needed Attends appropriate animal welfare conferences and continuing education to ensure the implementation of the most up to date animal care standards and practices Hold regular, effective meetings with department leads and participate in leadership meetings to provide appropriate operational updates Ensures a high level of client satisfaction by assisting in addressing complaints made by the public Additional projects as assigned by the CEO This is a summary of the primary job functions.

Requirements:
Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to establish a rapport quickly with persons of diverse backgrounds.
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment Adaptability to change and unexpected outcomes Ability to maintain effective interactions with coworkers, leadership, Board members, committee members, vendors, and other stakeholders Seasoned leadership experience (at least 3 years of professional experience in animal welfare and management role) with a demonstrated ability to direct, lead, delegate, problem solve and offer support Bachelor's degree strongly preferred This position will require on-call duties and management oversight that may occur outside of regular work hours Ability to always exhibit professionalism with team members and the public Possess the emotional intelligence to effectively communicate in sensitive and high stress situations Well organized, goal oriented, work efficiently under pressure Flexibility with working hours to include some weekends, evenings, and on-call situations Ability to be discrete with sensitive information Experience with computer systems, such as Microsoft Office platform Dedication to uphold the Animal Rescue League of Berks County values Bi-lingual preferred Physical and Mental Demands:
